Description
Seven Indian states, i.e. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura are fondly known as the Seven Sisters. All of these north-eastern Indian states are endowed with an extensive array of physiographic and eco-climatic conditions and the country’s widespread flora and fauna. In fact, north-eastern India is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the world.
Assam is blessed with rolling fields of sweet-smelling tea, Brahmaputra valley, Surma valley, the mountainous Assam Ranges and a great variety of wildlife. The word ‘Assam’ has its origin in the Sanskrit word ‘Asom’, meaning Unmatched or Peerless. In the mythological text, this land is described as Pragjyotishpura or the City of Eastern Lights, the site where Lord Brahma first created the stars. Apart from being the home to some of the best wildlife sanctuaries, the state has a large number of tribes, each unique in its tradition, culture, dress and exotic way of life. Canoes sailing down the Brahmaputra River is a sight to watch. Nature’s beauty and serenity is spread all over. Assam has the World Heritage Site of Kaziranga, which has the world’s biggest One-horned Rhino population.
Meghalaya, one of the other states of the Seven Sisters, is prominent as the Land of Floating Clouds. Bordered by Assam and Bangladesh on the northern and southern sides respectively, Meghalaya is a state of mountains, valleys and plateaus, dotted with stunning landscapes, breathtaking surroundings and diverse tourist attractions. Ganol, Daring, Sanda, Khri, and Mawpa are some rivers that flow in the state. Almost 80% of the area in the state is covered with forests, comprising majorly subtropical forests. The forests of Meghalaya support a wide variety of plants like epiphytes, succulent plants and shrubs. The state is popular for nearly 320 varieties of Orchids. The state has three wildlife Sanctuaries, namely Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, Siju Sanctuary and Baghmara Sanctuary. Tourists in Meghalaya love adventure-sports like trekking, hiking, mountaineering and water-sports like rowboats, sailing boats etc.
