Description
Located on Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu in southern India, Madurai is probably the oldest city in the state. Madurai carries some divine history, as it is said that Lord Shiva himself performed here sixty-four wonders called “Thiruvilaiyadals”. As early as the 3rd century BC, Megasthanes visited Madurai. Later many people from Rome and Greece visited Madurai and established trade with the Pandya kings. The markets in Madurai always are buzzing with activities. The day market is called Naalangadi and the evening market is called Allangadi. Due to this, Madurai is known as Thoonga Nagram, a city that never sleeps. The world-famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai has one of the largest temple-complexes in India. If Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, the Meenakshi Temple is the real heart of the city.
Munnar gets its name from its strategic location at the confluence of three rivers – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala Rivers. 'Moonu' means three and 'Aru' means river and so the name came Munnar. Located at an altitude of 6000 ft. in Idukki district, Munnar was the preferred summer resort of Britishers in colonial times. Vast swathes of tea plantations, whispering valleys, imposing mountains and exotic species of flora and fauna in wild sanctuaries and forests make the place a faoured tourist destination. The air here, replete with aroma of spice, is just ethereal. Veeranpuzha Beach is one of the popular beaches near Munnar. With mesmerizing blue waters and golden sandy shores, the beach is dotted with green vegetation.
