Have an early Breakfast to enjoy a full sightseeing day in Gwalior! Gwalior is rich in history and place of several magnificent temples and monuments. Start with Gwalior Fort, which is located at the top of a rocky hill! Known for its impenetrable fortification and security, this historic fort offers a panoramic view of Gwalior and its surroundings with its 10-meter-high walls. The fort is decked with spectacular sculptures and amazing architecture. Go to Jai Vilas Palace! The palace was built in 1874 by the Maharaja of Gwalior, Jayaji Rao Scindia, to do a grand welcome of King Edward VII, the then Prince of Wales. Today it stands as a mark of magnificence and culture of Madhya Pradesh. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, go to Gwalior Zoo! The zoo boasts of a variety of rare animals like sambhars, bison, hyena, spotted deer and a white tiger as well. You can also spot crocodiles, monkeys and some birds. After the zoo, you can visit Madhav National Park, where you can spot many wild animals like blackbuck, nilgai, leopard and chinkara, with some migratory and domestic birds like heron, kingfisher and more. Go to Saas Bahu Temple, also known as the Sahastrabahu Temple or Harisadanam temple, which is a twin temple that dates back to the 11th-century! The two Vishnu temples are located adjacent to each other and each of them bears intricate carvings and sculptures on their walls. Go back to Gwalior Fort in the evening to regale yourself with the Light and Sound Show! The Light and Sound Show here takes place in the amphitheatre at the Man Mandir Palace. The show, which lasts for 45 minutes, is a musical narration and storytelling experience that brings the fort’s history to you in a fascinating and compelling way. The show is conducted at 7:30 PM in Hindi and 8:30 PM in English from March to October and 6:30 PM in Hindi and 7:30 PM in English from November to February. Come back to your hotel! After Breakfast, go to explore Khajuraho Temples! Khajuraho Group of monuments are a group of Hindu and Jain temples, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Jaina patriarchs in Chhatarpur district. The temples are famous for their Nagara-style architectural symbolism and are richly carved with excellent sculptures inside and outside. Supposedly, most of the Khajuraho temples were built between 950 and 1050 in the times of Chandela Dynasty. The monuments at Khajuraho were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Of 85 original temples, 22 are still reasonably intact and well-maintained. With a few exceptions they are constructed of hard river sandstone. The temples are divided into three complexes, of which the western is the largest and best known, containing the magnificent Shaivite Temple Kandariya Mahadeva which represents high cluster of porches and turrets culminating in a spire. Go to Chaturbhuj Temple, also known as Jatkari Temple! The temple is situated south of Khajuraho, about 650 m south-west of Jatkari village. Consisting of a sanctum, vestibule, mandapa and porch, the temple houses a 2.75 m high four-armed statue of Vishnu. Unlike most other temples at Khajuraho, Chaturbhuj faces west, only to be illuminated by the golden rays of the setting sun to give us an out-of-the-world sight. Then go to visit Lakshmana Temple! With subsidiary temples, entrance-porch, mandapa and an internal ambulatory passage, the Lakshmana Temple is the earliest fully-developed example of a typical Khajuraho temple. The exterior wall is divided into two distinct zones (upper and lower) with wonderful sculptures depicting griffins, snake goddesses, apsaras and the famous couples in the recesses. After Breakfast, get ready for a fantastic day in Orchha! Start with Orchha Fort, which is situated on the seasonal island of Betwa River in Orchha! Though the fort was built by Rudra Pratap Singh, a Bundela Rajput king, in 16th century, yet the palaces and temples within the fort-premises were constructed over a period of time by successive kings of Orchha State. The fort represents Mughal architecture with typical stone-jali work and multi-faced arches at the entrance. Go to Jahangir Mahal, situated inside the Orchha fort! The Bundela ruler, Bir Singh Deo built Jahangir Mahal to welcome the Mughal King Jahanghir on his first visit to Orchha, Built in Indo-Islamic style, stunning sculptures, hanging balconies, delicate trellis and chhatris, topped domes etc. make Jahangir Mahal an architectural marvel. Two stone elephants greet you at the entrance with a bell, which used to mark the entry of the kings in those medieval times. Again inside the Orchha Fort only, The Ram Raja Temple, also known as Orchha Temple, holds religious importance as it is the only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as King Rama. Built in the 16th century, the temple resembles a palace with grand peach-tinted facade with domes. At a distance of 1.5 kms from Orchha Fort, you can do boat-riding and rafting in Betwa River. The rafting at Orchha is organized by MP Tourism. The activity starts from the scenic Kanchan Ghat. MP Tourism organizes two river safaris at Orchha. Tickets are arranged by MP Tourism and are available at the Betwa Retreat or at the Hotel Sheesh Mahal. Beginning from the scenic Kanchan Ghat, the 90-min package ends at Shiv Ghat with refreshments.
